Let's talk types of narratives!

And, yes, there are different types of narratives!

When people tell me they want to work on narratives or that they are working on narratives, I often follow up with the question:

What kind?

I generally get blank stares 😶

When I ask that question, I'm thinking a few things in my head:

👉🏼Narrative RETELL or GENERATION?

👉🏼If GENERATION, then FICTIONAL, PERSONAL or BOTH?

Just a quick refresher!

⭐️ RETELL involves the "retelling" of a selected probe story

⭐️ GENERATION involves the production of a new, novel story

It is important to differentiate between these two classes of narratives: retell & generation.

While retell is important, narrative generation (whether fictional or personal) is generally the ultimate goal.

Narrative retell skills help to lay the foundation for generative narrative skills.

BOTH narratives types are important and work hand in hand to support one another.

What type of narratives are YOU working on? Let's chat! 👇🏼👇🏼
